The ICEMULE BOSS stood out as the performer in our ice retention test and is among the largest pack coolers available distributing weight effectively. Its padded mesh shoulder straps and hip pads offer exceptional comfort, complemented by an adjustable hip belt and sternum strap for additional support. This durable pack is ideal for those with a taste for adventure of being securely attached to a whitewater raft or canoe.

During our half day hike in Colorado with a 10 pound bag of ice in tow we were impressed by how it could be carried. You might even forget it’s on your back. The design also enhances airflow compared to models keeping you cooler while on the move.
Crafted from MuleSkin 1,000 fabric the ICEMULE BOSS is built to endure tough conditions. Although the shoulder straps are slightly wider than others they do not restrict movement much as some cooler packs we’ve tested. However they are not as ergonomic as those found on the REI Co op Cool Trail Pack Cooler. The three generous exterior pockets, with zippers are a convenient feature though we did notice that the zippers could be smoother to operate.

With the help of its polar layer XT insulation the ice in our test remained frozen for an impressive 133 hours establishing the ICEMULE BOSS as a top performer in ice retention within its class. In regard to storage capacity this cooler has the ability to accommodate up to 24 cans of 12 ounces each making it a great option, for all your adventures and hiking trips.

2. Carhartt Insulated 24 Can – Best Hybrid Backpack Cooler

After testing out the Carhartt Cooler Backpack we discovered that it does a job at combining the features of a cooler and a backpack. The cooler section at the bottom is. Offers plenty of room to keep your items cold all day long. On top of that the upper compartment acts like a backpack providing ample space with mesh pockets for organized storage.

When the lower compartment is securely closed you can count on the Carhartt Cooler Backpack to keep things cool throughout the day. In our controlled test environment at 72°F it successfully kept our sensors cool for than 17 hours ensuring your food and drinks stay fresh.

From our experience with the shoulder straps this backpack is perfect for outings. The bottom cooler can comfortably fit up to six cans with ice making it ideal for keeping your lunch cold whether you’re working on site or spending a day alone at the beach.

Whether you’re looking for a cooler for sunny days or a versatile backpack for your daily travels the Carhartt Cooler Backpack delivers on functionality and durability. It’s an option for those who appreciate convenience and want to ensure their refreshments stay cool while, on the move.

3. Coleman High-Performance Leak Proof – Best Backpack Cooler with Wheels

The versatile cooler is great for people on the go with its wheels and extendable handle making it easy to move around on boardwalks in parking lots or at stadium entrances. It also comes with straps so you can carry it like a backpack for short hikes or when going up stairs.

Made with insulation this Coleman cooler can keep ice frozen solid for almost two hours and maintain cold beverages for up to 42 hours as claimed by the brand. It offers stability with wheels at the short legs in front to ensure a sturdy base that prevents tipping over on beaches or other uneven surfaces.

On the downside its capacity might disappoint some users. Despite Colemans assertion that it can hold 24 cans our test revealed it only accommodates 20 cans with minimal ice. When we tried filling it one third with cans and two thirds with ice during the insulation test we could only fit eight cans inside. The cooler has a zip pocket at the back and mesh straps on the sides which limit additional storage options.

As, for leakage the cooler held up well without any water seeping through the seams or zipper. The material did get wet. That might cause some trouble if sand or dirt clings, to the damp bag. In general even though this versatile cooler keeps things cold and is easy to carry its size and lack of storage choices could be worrisome depending on what you’re looking for.

4. ICEMULE Pro – Best Collapsible Backpack Cooler

The IceMule Pro stands out for its insulation capabilities at a more budget friendly price compared to the IceMule Boss and it features a distinctive cylindrical shape. This cooler isn’t just effective; it’s also very adaptable. You have the option to fold it flat or roll it up to easily fit into your carry on for convenient travel purposes.

When fully expanded the IceMule Pro can effortlessly accommodate 18 cans along with ice. Although the brand officially states that it can hold 18 cans in reality you could likely squeeze in up to 24 cans while still leaving space for ice. In our evaluation the ice remained entirely frozen for a duration of two hours ensuring that your drinks will stay cold during your outings.

The rolltop closure offers room for loading large or oddly shaped items and ensures a tight seal when closing the bag. As per our testing we found that both the inner fabric and seams were completely waterproof. Nevertheless we did observe some water seepage from the corners of the rolltop when the bag was placed on its side.

One minor downside is the external storage options. Despite having a strap to secure small items, in place having extra exterior pockets would have been a beneficial addition. The IceMule Pro stands out as an option for those looking for a tough easily portable cooler that delivers top notch performance. Ideal, for travelers outdoor lovers or anyone seeking a cooling companion.

5. TOURIT Cooler – Best Budget Backpack Cooler

Lets tackle the issue right from the start; despite its name this cooler backpack may not hold 30 cans especially with room for ice. However if you consider it as a 20 can cooler it still offers value. You can easily fit 20 cans and plenty of ice in the compartment while the insulated zip pocket in the lid can hold another three.

What sets apart the Tourit cooler backpack is its storage options. Alongside the lid pocket there are two mesh side holders for reusable water bottles a sizable zip pouch at the front with an inner zip pocket and an additional smaller pocket for snacks or other small items. This allows you to transport chilled food and drinks on ice along with paper plates, napkins, utensils and any other essentials you need to keep dry.

Even though its budget friendly price may suggest some limitations the Tourit doesn’t rank as tier, in insulation or durability. During our tests almost all of the ice melted within two hours. The zippers don’t create a watertight seal, which can lead to leaks—especially if the pack tips over.

With padding offered impacts aren’t well cushioned—our drop test even led to one can bursting open.
This cooler is quite easy to carry provides plenty of space for storage and comes at a price. If you’re looking for an roomy cooler that won’t cost you a fortune for your casual outings the Tourit is definitely a good option.

Things to Cosider Before Buying a Backpack Cooler:

Are you fed up with giving up space in your backpack for a big cooler? Do you wish to savor your escapades without the annoyance of warm drinks and soggy sandwiches? A backpack cooler could make all the difference. With numerous choices available, its crucial to think about your specific requirements before buying. Before splurging on a backpack cooler, pause and reflect on your outdoor pursuits, the size of your group and the features that are most important, to you.

Soft-Sided Backpack Coolers

You’ll love soft-sided backpack coolers for their flexibility and lightweight design, making them perfect for short trips and day excursions. They are often less expensive than hard-sided coolers and provide ample storage space for your crucials.

Hard-Sided Backpack Coolers

Coolers with hard-sided shells offer superior durability and protection for your gear. They are ideal for long trips, heavy loads, and rugged outdoor adventures. The hard-sided design provides excellent thermal insulation, keeping your items cool for extended periods. Additionally, they often feature reinforced seams and sturdy zippers, ensuring your gear remains safe and secure.

Insulated Backpack Coolers

HardSided insulated backpack coolers take thermal insulation to the next level. They feature thick, high-density insulation that keeps your items cool for hours, even in extreme temperatures. Types of insulated backpack coolers vary, but most have a thermal lining, foam insulation, or even vacuum-insulated panels. This makes them perfect for camping, fishing, or any outdoor activity where you need to keep your food and drinks cool.

Collapsible Backpack Coolers

Types of collapsible backpack coolers are perfect for backpacking, camping, or any adventure where space is limited. Another advantage of collapsible coolers is their lightweight design, which reduces fatigue and makes them easy to carry. They are often made of durable, water-resistant materials and feature multiple compartments for organized storage.

Size and Capacity

For your backpack cooler to be effective, it needs to be the right size for your needs. Consider how much gear you plan to carry and how often you’ll be using the cooler. A larger capacity may be necessary for longer trips or for carrying more items.

Insulation and Cooling Performance

Consider the type of insulation used and its ability to keep your items cool. Look for coolers with thick, high-density insulation and a waterproof lining to prevent ice from melting.

This is especially important if you plan to use your backpack cooler for extended periods or in hot weather. A good insulation system will keep your items cool for longer, making it an imperative factor to consider.

Durability and Material Quality
